Rockley Phonetics revealed the Bioptx Biosensing Band on Tuesday. This new wearable technology uses a special 36-wavelength IR sensor to collect data beneath the skin. It can monitor heart rate, breathing, skin temperature, and body hydration in a non-invasive way. The CEO of Rockley stated that the company has partnerships with major wearable brands, indicating that this technology could be integrated into mainstream watches.

The Bioptx Biosensing Band is a prototype wearable that doesn’t have a display, weighs 50g, measures 15mm thick, and needs to be charged every two or three days. Although it may not sound ideal, the technology behind it is very intriguing. The key feature of the band is a proprietary “spectrophotometer” that can deeply probe beneath the skin to collect unique data from the space between blood vessels and cells.

Unlike traditional smartwatches that focus on capturing skin surface data, Rockley’s technology is able to track hydration levels and body temperature more accurately by diving beneath the skin. The company is also testing non-invasive glucose monitoring using short-wave infrared (SWIF) and laser-based blood pressure monitoring.

Dr. Andrew Rickman, the CEO of Rockley, mentioned in an interview that his company is working with six out of the top 10 consumer device companies to integrate their health sensors into watches. Although the specific brands were not mentioned, it is likely that popular brands like Apple, Samsung, or Garmin are potential partners.
