Google Renames Nearby Share to Quick Share, Introducing a New Name and Icon for Android Users

Google is making some changes to its file-sharing service on Android, as per reports from reliable sources. The tech giant is reportedly rebranding Nearby Share to Quick Share, with a new name and icon that will be integrated throughout the Android user interface.

This rebranding could potentially simplify file sharing across different platforms and devices, especially for Samsung users. Quick Share is currently the branding that Samsung uses for its own file-sharing service, and Nearby Share is also available on Galaxy phones.

The news about this rebranding came to light after Android leaker Kamila Wojciechowska spotted the change following a recent Google Mobile Services update with version 23.50.13. Wojciechowska received a notification announcing the shift to “Quick Share,” along with a new icon featuring two arrows facing each other with semicircular tails.

It seems that Google didn’t stop at just the icon facelift, as they have updated the branding across the entire Android interface. Mishaal Rahman from Android Authority noted that the new Quick Share name is visible in the Quick Settings tile, the discoverability dialog, and the file-sharing interface.

While this seems to be just a name change and a fresh new icon, there’s speculation that Google and Samsung might be planning something bigger. There are hints that they could be planning to merge their file-sharing services or at least make them work together seamlessly.

Currently, Samsung users have to switch between the native Quick Share and Google’s Nearby Share when sharing files, but a potential merger could lead to a future where there’s just one option that works on both Samsung and other Android devices.

Having different file-sharing services with the same name could be confusing, especially for Samsung users. While there’s no solid proof yet of a merger, the speculation is high considering the situation. This move could ultimately benefit users by making file sharing simpler and more seamless across different devices.
