Apple’s Newest iPhone 16 Pro to Feature Tetraprism Lens for Improved Zoom Capability

The latest Apple iPhone 15 Pro Max is making waves in the smartphone world as the first iPhone to come equipped with a periscope lens, allowing for an increased focal length without protruding from the phone’s body. This technology, called the Tetraprism zoom camera, uses four prisms to extend the lens’s focal length to 120mm, delivering 5x optical zoom capabilities.

According to Jon McCormack, Apple’s VP of camera software engineering, the decision to cap the optical zoom at 5x was to ensure stability and ease of use for consumers. Samsung seems to share this sentiment, as they are reportedly replacing their 10x optical zoom lens with a 5x optical zoom on the upcoming Galaxy S24 Ultra.

Looking ahead, there are rumors that Apple will include the Tetraprism lens in the iPhone 16 Pro next year, with TF International’s Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo citing improved manufacturing yields from Largan, the company that supplies Apple with the Tetraprism lens assembly, as the reason for this addition.

Largan’s increased yield on Tetraprism zoom camera production allows it to supply the iPhone 16 Pro with the feature. Ming-Chi Kuo previously cited the expected increase in the display size of the iPhone 16 Pro from 6.1 inches to 6.3 inches as the reason for including the periscope lens. However, with Largan’s capability to raise its production yield on Tetraprism zoom cameras to 70%, it is now profitable for the company, and they can produce enough to supply both the iPhone 16 Pro and the iPhone 16 Pro Max.

With Apple and Huawei being the fastest-growing brands in global periscope camera smartphone shipments, Largan is expected to supply the majority of the Tetraprism zoom cameras being used by Apple in 2024. This improved technology and production capacity will allow Apple to ship 160% more premium iPhone 16 Pro series units next year compared to this year’s iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max.

In addition to Apple, Huawei’s flagship models for the first half of 2024 will also feature periscope lenses, with Largan expected to supply 50-60% of the periscope lens assemblies used by the company. With these advancements, Largan’s profits are expected to exceed Wall Street expectations in the coming year, and consumers can look forward to enhanced camera capabilities in their smartphones.
